In the past, I personally tended to have a pessimistic view of it.

I used to consider it as something that deceived or manipulated my mind, and I never questioned such assumption.. until I started this project.

Here we don't take common sense for granted,

we dislike conventions.

I began this project with the initial goal of finding the positive side of what we commonly identify as fake, which led me to Synthetic Media, the emblem of fakery. Synthetic Media is an emerging technology that allows to create visual and audio content of real individuals saying and doing something they actually never said or did.

Then, I applied Synthetic Media to the Fashion industry, a world that always fascinated me, but that I have never had the opportunity to get closer to, both academically and professionally.

What's your perception of
the concept of fake?

(deep)fake it
till you make it.

“With the invention of photography in the 19th century, humans gained the ability to 'capture reality' through a non-human medium for the first time. It quickly turned out that this medium could be manipulated. (...) When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, there was a dearth of heroic-style imagery of the President. To address this, one engraver decided to superimpose a photograph of Lincoln’s head onto an engraving of the body of Southern politician John C. Calhoun" (Schick, 2020, pp. 28-29).

Today, tampering media often implies the use of editing software such as Photoshop, but given the latest developments in Artificial Intelligence, it is heading towards new future directions.

If we are already unsure whether to believe something we hear, see, or read - soon, society's understanding might be entirely left behind.
